Groundwork Pro invites Caroline Sabin to facilitate a workshop that explores dancers relationship to class, improvisation, body and mind. How can we overcome our mental and physical blocks? How can we take care of our mental well being during class, creative processes and performance?
The workshop will be held in the Dance Studio at Chapter, 11.30am – 5pm. The day will involve alternating moving and sharing so please dress in layers and bring extra clothes with you to avoid getting stiff and cold. Please bring food to share so that we can eat together.
Please email groundworkprocardiff@gmail.com to reserve your place. Places are limited so booking is essential.
“Many dancers find grace, facility and skill flow naturally when they are improvising or working within a loose structure. The body’s extraordinary intelligence makes the subtle choices that allow balancing, turning, stepping and leaping easefully possible. Then class happens.
For others the formality of class suits them beautifully, but when asked to devise or improvise they feel stuck, self-conscious and uncreative.
And some of us struggle with both despite loving, studying and practicing dance for many years.
In this workshop we will explore the inner dialogues that block both our technique and our inspiration. This will not be an ‘everything you do is beautiful’ workshop as while those are incredibly important and valid they are not getting to the root of this particular problem.
First we will engage in an exercise designed to maximise group sharing of personal fears and frustrations without leaving us feeling too exposed and vulnerable. That said a willingness to participate and help build a sense of mutual trust, acceptance, kindness and confidentiality are essential.
Having located our own ‘negative voice’ and discovered that many others feel the same we will find ways to change the critical tone into something more helpful.”
